MARK HUDSON has joined Charlton after failing to agree a new contract with Crystal Palace.

The 26-year-old centre back had his best season at Selhurst Park and his efforts ensured Palace kept the meanest defence in the Championship.

But after rejecting fresh terms, HUDSON - who took over the captain's arm band last season - opted for one of the clubs chasing his signature.

Charlton manager Alan Pardew said: "Unfortunately for us, MARK was brilliant for Palace last season and I'm absolutely overjoyed with his signing. He's a player I have admired for a long time.

"I think he will be a fantastic player for us, not only on the playing field but off the pitch as well.

"He is a strong character and represents everything that is good about professional football, and I look forward to working with him and seeing him in our team next season."

HUDSON, who played every match bar one last term, signed from Fulham in early 2004 after impressing on loan and made 136 appearances, scoring seven goals.
